When you have a sore back, a twisted ankle, or a shoulder that just won’t move right, the first question is often, “Who should I see?”
In Australia, we are lucky to have excellent Physiotherapists and Doctors, but their roles are distinct. Understanding the Musculoskeletal GP vs Physio difference can save you time and help you get the right treatment faster. At Victa Health, we often work alongside physios to ensure our patients get complete care.
Here is a simple breakdown of who does what.
The Physiotherapist: The “Rehab” Expert
Physiotherapists are experts in physical rehabilitation and movement. Their primary goal is to restore function through mechanical means.
You generally see a Physio for:
- Manual Therapy: Hands-on massage, mobilization, and manipulation of joints.
- Exercise Prescription: Specific movements to strengthen weak areas (like after a sprained ankle).
- Post-Op Rehab: Getting you moving again after a surgery.
- Load Management: Advice on how to train safely without re-injuring yourself.
If you know what your injury is and need a plan to strengthen it, a Physio is often the right choice.
The Musculoskeletal GP: The “Medical” Expert
A Musculoskeletal GP is a doctor with a special interest in the medical management of bone and joint issues. The core Musculoskeletal GP vs Physio difference lies in the tools we can use. Because we are medical doctors, we can provide interventions that physios cannot.
You should see a Musculoskeletal GP for:
- Medical Diagnosis: We can order X-rays, Ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs to confirm exactly what is wrong.
- Pain Management: We can prescribe stronger anti-inflammatories or pain relief to help you sleep and move.
- Injections: We perform Cortisone or other joint injections to reduce inflammation rapidly.
- Referrals: If your injury requires surgery, we are the gateway to referring you to an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
The Perfect Partnership
The reality is that for many injuries, you need both.
For example, if you have a frozen shoulder, it is very difficult to do physiotherapy exercises because the pain is too intense. In this scenario, you would see a Musculoskeletal GP first for a diagnosis and perhaps a cortisone injection to settle the pain. Once the pain is manageable, you would then see a Physio to rebuild your strength.
Summary: Which One First?
- Go to a Physio if: You have a minor strain, know what the injury is, and need exercises to fix it.
- Go to a Musculoskeletal GP if: You are in severe pain, need a diagnosis (scan), need medication/injections, or physio hasn’t worked for you so far.
